Winning Grey Cup Championships as a football player, leading a football club with his business acumen from a position of debt, to being able to move into a new stadium and raising a family are just a few of his success stories. It was this determination, passion and positivity that enabled Lyle to overcome his greatest obstacle – cancer. This experience led him to create the Never Alone Foundation.

Whether on the field or not, Lyle Bauer has proven himself time and again. He is credible, entertaining, relevant, compelling and authentic.

Lyle will bring his unique insight from the world of competitive sports, business and his own personal journey battling cancer in a humorous and engaging style.

Speaking fees will be donated to the Never Alone Foundation. Please contact Shirlee Preteau at spreteau@neveralonefoundation.ca or call (204) 779-2441 for more information.

A brief biography of Lyle Bauer

Lyle is quick to point to his family as the inspiration to meet all of the challenges in the journey of life. “Heidi, Danni, Brodie, and Wesley have been and continue to be the solid foundation of support in meeting the challenges…family is everything.”

Bauer played 10 seasons as an offensive lineman in the Canadian Football League — all in Winnipeg — and appeared in 161 regular-season games. He helped Winnipeg win Grey Cups in 1984, 1988 and 1990. As a player, he served as the team’s representative to the Canadian Football League Players’ Association. Lyle was inducted as a member of the Winnipeg Football Club Hall of Fame in 1998.

Bauer majored in business administration at Weber State College. He moved to the real estate industry in 1982 and practiced that profession throughout his playing career. Upon his retirement from football in February of 1992, he became the Bombers’ assistant GM and held that position for three years. During his tenure, he was named the interim general manager for the duration of Cal Murphy’s absence in 1992.

He left the Bombers in 1995 to pursue business opportunities in the grain industry, working for AgPro in Calgary where he served as the company’s general manager. He holds the C.I.M. and P.Mgr. professional designations through the Canadian Institute of Management. Bauer is a member of the International Association of Assembly Managers and completed the IAAM executive program at Cornell University in 2005. He is also a member of the Stadium Managers Association.
Bauer returned as president and chief executive officer of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers from February of 2000 to December 2009. The club went from a position of financial difficulty to a position of long-term stability. Before his departure in 2009 he implanted a plan that would see a new football stadium built in Winnipeg. He is now the president and chief operating officer of the Calgary Stampeders Football Club.

The Never Alone Foundation held its sixth annual luncheon on Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at Canad Inns Polo Park. Joe Aiello, a popular radio personality was the guest speaker. He delivered a speech that made everyone laugh and cry. Thank you to everyone who supported the 6th Annual Never Alone Foundation Luncheon. Lyle Bauer started the luncheon off by saying, “You are guaranteed to laugh and cry and you will walk away a different person.”. Guest speaker Joe Aiello delivered on those promises during a courageous speech about his own dealings with cancer. Hushed and sombre moments during his speech included a story where he spoke about the NHL playoffs and how his wife, a Canuck’s fan would have loved to have seen her team play against his Bruins. Laughter came through out the speech as well. At one point, with Joe standing between Lyle Bauer and Dave Black, said “How stereotypical, an Italian guy in a suit with a couple of heavies on each side”. We would like to thank Joe for a heartfelt and memorable speech.

During the luncheon several Difference Maker Awards were given out.

Community Difference Maker: Manitoba Public Insurance Employees Service Centre #5

Individual Difference Maker: Brad Krulicki

Corporate Difference Maker: Manitoba Lotteries Corporation

Youth Difference Maker: Assiniboine Park Rangers Hockey Team

As well, Shane Jones was presented the Todd Davison Scholarship and the Robert Barrott Volunteer of the Year Award was given to Donna Boutang.
