The Never Alone Foundation held its sixth annual luncheon on Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at Canad Inns Polo Park. Joe Aiello, a popular radio personality was the guest speaker. He delivered a speech that made everyone laugh and cry. Thank you to everyone who supported the 6th Annual Never Alone Foundation Luncheon. Lyle Bauer started the luncheon off by saying, “You are guaranteed to laugh and cry and you will walk away a different person.”. Guest speaker Joe Aiello delivered on those promises during a courageous speech about his own dealings with cancer. Hushed and sombre moments during his speech included a story where he spoke about the NHL playoffs and how his wife, a Canuck’s fan would have loved to have seen her team play against his Bruins. Laughter came through out the speech as well. At one point, with Joe standing between Lyle Bauer and Dave Black, said “How stereotypical, an Italian guy in a suit with a couple of heavies on each side”. We would like to thank Joe for a heartfelt and memorable speech.

During the luncheon several Difference Maker Awards were given out.

Community Difference Maker: Manitoba Public Insurance Employees Service Centre #5

Individual Difference Maker: Brad Krulicki

Corporate Difference Maker: Manitoba Lotteries Corporation

Youth Difference Maker: Assiniboine Park Rangers Hockey Team

As well, Shane Jones was presented the Todd Davison Scholarship and the Robert Barrott Volunteer of the Year Award was given to Donna Boutang.

Only a short year ago, the Never Alone Foundation lost Robert Barrott, one of its most enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers. He was always there to cheerfully lend a hand. Robert wouldn’t stop until the job was done. He and his wife Mandy gave more to our organization than anyone could ask for. His loss is felt deeply by all of us.

In Robert’s memory, we created an award to be given out at our annual luncheon. The Robert Barrott Volunteer of Distinction award will be given to an individual who shows the same kind of dedication and caring that he did. His wife Mandy continues to volunteer and amaze us with her warmth and spirit.

ROBERT BARROTT Peacefully, on June 25, 2010, surrounded by his loved ones, Robert passed away at the age of 54. Robert was born June 18th, 1956 in Winnipeg. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Mandy, son Scott (Amanda), daughter Crystal (Marc), his grandson Tristan (Mr. Buttons), his mother Doreen, sister Carol (Dale), brother Daryl (Bev), nieces Jillian and Tracy, guardian angel Dara as well as his extended family the Chaputs. Robert was predeceased by his father Ernie, and his special Grandma Cove. As a self-employed contractor, Robert was able to use his natural handyman talents everyday. Recently, he joined the Winnipeg Blue Bombers Operations Team incorporating work with his passion for football. He dedicated his life to helping his family, friends and strangers. Through organ donation, he touched the lives of five recipients and their families. We appreciate the compassionate care provided by members of WFPS and the St. Boniface Hospital with special thanks to neurologist Dr. Fast and Chaplin Lorne Korol.

Fish for a Cure not only brought eager fishermen to Lac Du Bonnet, but also group of volunteers from the Camp Quality Puppeteers. They put on four separate performances of the plays to help educate children about cancer, its effects on children and how even though the physical changes are obvious, the person inside is still the same. All of the children had a great time and learned something about tolerance and friendship.

Four puppets delivered an important message incorporating the virtues of Compassion, Courage, Kindness and Respect. This was done through a 30-45 minute play and question period which discussed the challenges faced by puppets Sophie and Matthew who are both dealing with cancer and the side effects of their treatment. Puppets Jack and Natalie showed how good friends can help by just listening.

Through generous donations, the Never Alone Foundation has been able to provide funds to Camp Quality to bring their puppet program. To have the puppets visit your school or for more information please email Deb Scott (deb.scott@shaw.ca)

* The details of the puppet program have been copied from the Camp Quality Puppet Program pamphlet

FISH FOR A CURE Share

The Fish For a Cure event is about so much more than fishing. It is a day to celebrate life, and the things that make life worthwhile. Not the least of which is the chance to go out onto the beautiful Winnipeg River in a dream boat with the best group of Lund guides in the province and have a chance at catching “the big one”.

This year we had four honorary anglers, Les M., Rob C., Ray K. and Aleksei M. After dealing with the daily struggles with cancer, these Honorary Anglers and their guests most certainly deserved a day of relaxation. From those in the midst of the fight of their lives, to those who have supported a loved one through their battle, the honorary anglers were able to put their battle aside for a few hours and enjoy the action on the lake. It was a reminder to all the participants that although a cure is the ultimate goal, sharing laughter, taking a break from treatments and having caregivers relax for a few hours is equally important.

The weather could not have been better and after an enjoyable breakfast at Canad Inns Polo Park, guests were transported by bus to Lac Du Bonnet. The sun sparkled on the river almost as much as the sparkling eyes of our fishermen!

The teams pushed the limit and arrived at the dock for the weigh-in with seconds to spare. Incredibly, the winners were the same team that took first prize last year. The boat was sponsored by City Auto Paints & led by guide Andrew Klopak, Bob Cote, Stu Nixon and Luc Gendron.

Second place went to the team of Ryan Kwiatkowski, Damian Kwaitkowski, Chris Reed and guide Dale Saunders (sponsored by Urban Fishing Tournament) .

Third place went to Curtis Gibson, Jason Loster, Bill Smithson and guide Mark Ruml (sponsored by the Health Sciences Centre Foundation).

The participants arrived back at Canad Inns to enjoy a dinner and the presentation of awards. Many more laughs were shared and a few tears as well. A prize won by one honorary angler was donated to another younger honorary angler, so he could take a group of friends to the Calgary – Winnipeg football game on July 14th. This moment captured the true meaning on this event – loved ones and strangers supporting and encouraging one another.

As in all Never Alone events, it is the people who make it special and this event could not be possible without the support of many people. A huge thank you to Jason Gauthier, Craig Stapon and Andrew Klopak for their never ending enthusiasm, the fabulous Lund guides, the Never Alone Volunteers, Canad Inns, CityTV and The Winnipeg Sun.

We could not stage this event without the support of our Corporate Partners and is much appreciated. A huge thank you to the following sponsors:

On Sunday, June 26 the Never Alone Foundation held the 2nd annual Wings for Warren – Friends For Sure event. Warren Remple would be proud. Warren valued friendship above all else and he never turned down a chance to ride a bike ,help a friend, or eat chicken wings! This event allowed participants to do all three.

By 9:00 a.m. the motorcycles were starting to roar into the parking lot at Canad Inns Polo Park. As one of our volunteers said, the sound of that many powerful engines revving at one time moved something deep inside. She wanted to jump on a bike and go. Lyle Bauer summed it up nicely when he said “Give a bunch of guys with bikes any excuse to ride and they’re there. Give ‘em a good cause on top of that and they are out in full force.”

The weather co-operated this year and we had a record number of participants in the poker derby who not only went riding to try and make the best poker hand but also to help others who are battling cancer. Congratulations to Chris Henderson, who won the derby with 4 of a kind!

When the time came for the Show & Shine the chrome in the lot was blinding. How could anyone choose just one bike for best of show? There were so many gorgeous machines out in the parking lot that many of the participants were wiping drool off of their chins! The cars that came out were equally gorgeous. Choosing a winner was difficult. Congratulations to Michelle Childs and her 02 Softail and Bob Murray with his 1939 Ford.

Thanks to Canad Inns and their tireless staff we all enjoyed a delicious meal with all the trimmings. To all of those who donated prizes for our silent auctions, and the volunteers who gave of their time to help make this event a success, we give a huge THANK YOU. A special thank you to our sponsors, Canad Inns , The Winnipeg Sun , City TV and Harley Davidson – Winnipeg for going that extra mile and of course the participants who supported this ride.

Warren Remple was always willing to go just a little bit farther. It is gratifying to know that the rest of Winnipeg is too.

Tournament that was held on May 4, 2011. An abundance of laughter and intense poker was only overshadowed by the incredible generosity of the players and their guests.

Applause was a fitting end to those exiting the final table, especially for Fatosh Tailor, Trevor Nott and Troy Westwood who graciously donated winnings to the Never Alone Foundation.
